Judy Gelfert Portfolio
“Subject matter is, in general, not an important factor to me. I am inspired mostly by light and its power to create a particular atmosphere, whether it be the quiet serenity of a hill-side in summer, the bustle of a morning farmers’ market, or the frigid coldness amid the shadows of a snowy European street. As an artist, I feel it is my privilege to be able to immortalize simple moments in time that we all experience, and to share that with as many people as possible. Beauty is everywhere we look, and a painting, to me, is a means of stopping time long enough to really understand and appreciate the world we live in. I aim to communicate emotion through my paintings and invite the viewer to participate in the experience.” - Judy Gelfert
Judy Gelfert, an award winning artist, was born in Bowie, Texas. She grew up on her family’s ranch where she discovered her ability to draw and paint at an early age. Her interest in art led her to earn 2 years of studio art credits while studying history at the University of Texas at Austin. After graduation, she became a flight attendant for United Airlines, and was based in London, Santiago, Chile, and Washington, D.C.
During her years with United, Judy painted on her days off, taking advantage of the wide range of subject matter made available to her through her travels. When her husband accepted a position in Arlington, Texas three years ago, Judy decided to take a leave-of-absence offered by the airline to concentrate on her art career. Since then, she has been painting full-time in her home studio in Arlington, and has shown her work on the local and national levels.
Preferring oils as her medium, Judy paints in a loose, impressionistic style. By concentrating on the use of value, color, and design, she aims to produce realistic effects of light and shadow with as little actual detail as possible.
Judy has participated in numerous one person and group shows, and her work has been accepted in juried competitions in the Southwest. She also gives back to her profession by teaching art workshops to aspiring artists when her schedule permits.
