Keith Tobin Portfolio

"When I first worked with metal it felt so natural and comfortable. For
me, the transition from two to three dimensional pieces was instinctive;
the limitless number of materials and formats that sculpture presents
still inspires me today. My formats are diverse with an emphasis on
dynamism and structure. Through my work, I try to push the limits of
my dexterity with a focus on industrial motifs. The framework or bones
of a composition is what drives the viewer into my work. Once the
viewer is engaged with the sculpture I want them to be pulled into and
thru the entire form.”

- Keith Tobin

The industry, architecture and public sculpture of Chicago have always been a primary source of inspiration. The vertical concrete and steel structures intrigued my imaginations as an architect as a child. Throughout my childhood there, I was surrounded by art from Picasso, Calder, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Picasso’s “Baboon” is special to me because the city is pulled into the lofty translucent figure and becomes a part of it.

I prefer not to name my individual pieces or choose vague names so I don’t interfere with the overall visual experience. I hope this gives the viewer a chance to determine his or her own designation; this is always the principle goal of my work. My nonfigurative formats also encourage the viewers to formulate their own opinions. I leave my metal works raw and exposed to the elements; their environmental metamorphosis becomes part of the sculpture itself. If I could tie this idea back to point in my life I would point at the Baboon.
